This porcelain demitasse or espresso cup and saucer was produced in France by Theodore Haviland Limoges between 1895 and 1903. The saucer has a diameter of 4 3/4 inches and is 1 inch deep. The cup is 2 1/4 inches tall with a diameter of 2 1/4 inches. The set is decorated with wide bands of cobalt blue. Other portions of the cup and saucer have light blue shading.
The entire surface of both pieces are elaborately gilded with raised gold. There seemed to be a problem with the application of this overly ambitious gilding. Many of the gilded beads popped and some of the gold that was applied over the glaze just came off when touched. Still, it is unusual to find such an ornate set from Theodore Haviland.
