The history of Shelley China begins about 1860 when Henry Wileman (owner of the Foley Works) built a second pottery in Staffordshire, England for the purpose of producing fine china. Joseph Shelley joined him as a traveler (salesperson) in 1862 and later became a partner eventually taking charge of the china production.

Under the 50 year leadership of Percy Shelley (Joseph's son), the company continuously improved china quality and built the foreign export business. The name officially changed from Wileman & Company to Shelley Potteries in 1925 after ensuing legal battles begun in 1910 with other potteries using the region's name of Foley. The peak of the production was in the 1950's and, due to modernization and the formation of conglomerates, Shelley's more expensive bone china lost market share resulting in the sale of the company in 1966 to Allied Potteries. All of Shelley's facilities are now gone. This superb quality china has colors that are bright and vivid.

This is painted on a boldly scalloped & fluted blank of high white fine bone china with a gold trim on the edge. There is fancifully applied gold on the cup's handle. The most interesting feature is the hand painted English & Canadian flags on the saucer.

This cup is in the Daisy shape which was produced from 1899 to 1913. While this cup & saucer is classified as used, we can find no chips, nicks, rubbings, scratches, cracks, hairlines, or repairs. There appears to be absolutely no wear to the vivid colors and no crazing. The lack of utensil scratches on the pieces attest to the high quality of the bone china.

This set is beautiful and elegantly decorated. The saucer has a diameter of 5 1/2" and stands 3/4" high. The Daisy cup has a diameter of 3 5/16" and a height of 2 1/4". As collectors ourselves, we tend to be very picky and find it necessary to point out anything we see. We believe you will be very satisfied with this decorative, yet functional, cup and saucer set.
