Here we have a lot of 7 two-piece demitasse cup and saucer sets (for a total of 14 pieces) from Shelley (England, UK) in a rare shape variation of the elegant embossed Regency pattern. Features metallic gold trim (gilt) around the rim of the saucer and top edges of the cups, as well as completely covering the cup handles. The cup style on these is the "can" (mug-like) shape, straight up and down, with no foot.
The top rim is smooth and perfectly round, while the bottom rim is scalloped, as with the more common "dainty" shape. The "dainty" shape is scalloped top and bottom. The surface is beautifully embossed with alternating smooth and lined triangles. The saucer shape is the scarcer smooth, perfectly round shape as well not the more common "dainty" scalloped shape. The saucer has alternating triangular sections of embossed loops and smooth sections, with the overall appearance of a star or sun.Cup: 2 3/8" ht x 2 3/8" diameter. Condition : Our photographs reveal the condition best -- please enlarge and zoom in on them, and examine them carefully.
Very fresh and clean pieces, bright and shiny, with very shiny gold in minty condition with no signs of use or abuse. This set appears to have been used for display only. To distinguish between something that we know has been used because it came from a private home, even though it shows no signs of use. And something that we know is brand new because it came from a store and is unused. No chips, cracks, scratches, silver/gray utensil marks, stains, crazing, or gold loss.
A few of the saucers have a couple of tiny, very light, completely colorless, scratches to the glaze (from stacking) -- the kind that are visible only when the piece is held up at just the right angle to a bright source of light. It displays beautifully as a minty set even though the cup has a crack in it, and the saucer has a tiny chip on the foot back side. We consider funky odors (cigarette smoke, mildew, etc) to be an important part of a condition report. Corndogcache is a 100% non-smoking environment, and we'll let you know if any of our vintage items smell like it (or anything else) from activities they may have been involved in before they came to us.
