Antique Furstenburg Coffee Cup & Saucer, 18th Century
CONDITION: Slight wear to gilding, excellent condition, considering age. This porcelain coffee cup and saucer was produced in Germany by the Ducal Brunswick Porcelain Manufactory, or Furstenburg, between 1753 and 1770. Duke Carl I of Brunswick founded the factory in 1747.
The saucer has a diameter of 4 1/2 inches and is 1 1/2 inches deep. The cup is 2 3/8 inches tall with a diameter of 2 1/4 inches.
The cup is can shaped and the saucer is without a well and quite deep. The ground color is black with cailloute` gilding (gravel or pebble-like). The center of the cup and interior of the saucer have a beautifully hand painted monogram.
The letters are painted with tiny flowers. Cups and saucers were often personalized in this manner by factories such as Sevres and Meissen in the 18th century. The bands of gold framing the monograms still have remnants of the delicate burnished decorations. The shape, design and gilding is so similar to those porcelains from Sevres, if you didn't look at the mark, you could be mistaken.This set was produced for a person of high rank during that period as the cost would have been prohibitive for others. It is a fine, rare example of early Furstenburg. FOR OUR CUSTOMERS OUTSIDE THE US. The Post Office requires this.
